Music for films
Here is a selection of cool songs from films I like. The first two tracks are not available on any releases to my knowledge, so I have ripped them from the films themselves.
Firstly, a beautiful tune sung by Nicholas Sarkozy’s sister-in-law that features in the opening credits of her thoroughly amusing film “Cockles and Muscles”. This is a very light (and very French) sex comedy with an excellent soundtrack by Philippe Miller that has not been separately released for some reason.
Next, an excellent number sung by Sally Yeh from Tsui Hark’s “Peking Opera Blues”. This outstanding period comedy/action/drama is currently not available on DVD in the UK, but is one of my all-time favourite pieces of Hong Kong cinema.
Finally, a frankly bizarre song from the 1950s musical/comedy/fantasy “The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T”. This visually stunning and thematically unsettling film is the only feature film to have been written by Dr. Seuss, and is of particular interest to me because of its unusual Freudian/Cold War undercurrent.
The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is one of my all-time faves. It played all the time on TV when I was a kid. I love the dungeon of persecuted musicians and the frightening executioner/liftman.
I love Peking Opera Blues, and that Sally Yeh song! It’s on American and French iTunes, not sure about British though.
