Chinese wallpapers at the National Trust

The National Trust’s Treasure Hunt blog has been delving into the world of Chinese wallpapers recently and I thought I’d share a few of these wonderful photos with you.

Ornate, hand-painted wallpapers like these were the height of luxury during the 18th century and it’s amazing that some are still extant in their original homes.

What really caught my eye were the pictures of the newly painted fascimile wallpapers at Avebury Manor.

The design was applied to the walls by stencil and then details were painstakingly painted in by hand.

The design may not strictly be historically accurate but I think the decision to feature flashes of local British flora and fauna (such as wild pansies, red admiral and peacock butterflies, great crested newts and foxes) on the wallpaper adds another neat layer of history onto this restoration project. After all, true Chinoiserie, like the original Chinese wallpapers, was always made for Western consumption and Western tastes.

You can read more about Chinoiserie and wallpaper on the Treasure Hunt blog.

Christmas treat: new video by Jade Boyd!

Merry Christmas everyone! As a special festive surprise, here’s a new video by the brilliant Jade Boyd for our song “Tracker Vale” (taken from our 2010 free download EP Places). We first hooked up with Jade via Brighton’s The Outer Church, when she made some amazing visuals to accompany our gig there last year. In between working at the Unsound festival, the Southbank’s Sound Of Fear event and all sorts of other exciting projects, she’s fine-tuned some of the visuals that she made for us into a beautiful and haunting clip that we’re absolutely delighted with. Hope you enjoy it and have a wyrd and magickal holiday season…

Three summer reads

Maybe you’re lucky enough to be heading on a beach holiday this summer or perhaps you’re staying firmly inside to escape the heat and crowds. Either way, summer is traditionally the time for book round-ups and recommendations.

Journey By Moonlight, The Hearing Trumpet and Wish Her Safe At Home

Here are my three recommended reads for the long summer days and nights ahead.

Journey By Moonlight
By Antal Szerb

An arrestingly dreamlike novel about a young man’s flight from his respectable life in pursuit of the ghosts of his past. Written with Szerb’s characteristic light touch, the story is funny, sad and spooky all at once. It is sure to set you adrift in a sea of nostalgic wistfulness.

The Hearing Trumpet
By Leonora Carrington

Carrington, who died earlier this year, was perhaps better known as a Surrealist artist than as an author and I chanced upon this book just browsing in my local library. In short: a group of bee-worshipping women in an old people’s home open a gate into hell and bring about a second ice age. A giddy mix of folklore, religious mysticism, hysteria and Surrealism, this short novel is compelling in every sense.

Wish Her Safe At Home
By Stephen Benatar
Rachel, a middle-aged woman who inherits a beautiful house in Bristol, descends (or is it ascends?) into a delusional fantasy life full of success, romance and vibrant colour. Brilliant and humorous, this novel richly portrays Rachel’s breezy and joyous teeterings along the edge of self-styled eccentricity and a very real madness.

Bonus:
And, of course, I couldn’t possibly talk about my book recommendations without mentioning Théophile Gautier’s My Fantoms! We named our album after this wonderful collection of short stories translated by Richard Holmes and hope that some of its haunting sensuality (and humour) rubbed off on our songs.

Highlights from Macau

I took the opportunity to visit Macau while I was in Hong Kong recently and thought I’d share some of my photos.

I’ve always wanted to visit Macau and the mix of Chinese and Portuguese colonial influences in the region do definitely give it a special atmosphere. If you get away from the casinos (some of which were unbelievably spectacular and spectacularly huge), you can find many quiet moments, especially in Taipa and Coloane.

Unwoken today!

Unwoken by A Taut Line and Hong Kong In The 60s

Unwoken, our collaboration with A Taut Line is out today! You can find this digital only release at Boomkat and other online stores.

As well as original songs and our collaboration “Don’t Wake Me”, the eight-track EP features amazing remixes by Dominatrix, Royalty, LDFD and BD1982.

This is the first release on Diskotopia, a new label run by A Taut Line and BD1982. Matt (A Taut Line) and Christopher have been making music together since childhood so this EP has been a long time coming! We hope you enjoy it.

Visuals by Jade Boyd

For our thoroughly enjoyable recent gig at The Outer Church in Brighton, we were lucky enough to have visuals done specially for us by video artist, Jade Boyd. Given that Jade had recently provided visuals for none other than the legendary Alan Howarth (when he performed at the Unsound Festival), this was really quite an honour for us. We very much hope to work with Jade again in the future. Here are some stills from the video she made for our performance:

Chris Dedrick/Free Design Tribute

We were saddened last month to learn about the death of Chris Dedrick, band-member and main songwriter in one of our all-time favourite groups, The Free Design. The extremely talented film director/actor/writer Sarah Warren has made a lovely tribute to Chris and his band’s amazing music. Sharp-eyed fans should recognise Sarah from her appearance in the video to our single, Footsteps.
