Thanks Norm! I think that recent developments in underground/electronic music have shown that a lot of people feel the same way, so maybe past snobbery about this sort of music is finally on the way out. Some really awesome-looking stuff in your list, a lot of it I don't know, so plenty of cool things to seek out! OK, well, cheers, hopefully we'll make it to Seattle some day...

I agree fully! There are some amazing records out there that have been overlooked or are maligned because of some new age reputation, but if you listen to a lot of these records, many of them are as beautiful and confounding as some of the best spacey krautrock music. And what's great is a lot of this stuff still sits for dirt cheap in record shops. Here's a list I made of some new age/ambient/electronic records I like: http://rateyourmusic.com/list/ignatius/aural_coma__an_account_of_my_top_ambient_drone_minimalist_new_age_

Love your band, BTW! Come to Seattle sometime!

[...] September 5, 2010 by Mei Yau Leave a Comment We were saddened last month to learn about the death of Chris Dedrick, band-member and main songwriter in one of our all-time favourite groups, The Free Design. The extremely talented film director/actor/writer Sarah Warren has made a lovely tribute to Chris and his band’s amazing music.
Hi,

many thanks for blogging about the 7"s, and really glad you like them. They are certainly lovely items to behold, even before you actually listen to the music! We'll see what happens with Ghost Box, they're pretty much our favourite record label, so just being involved with them at all is a huge honour for us!

Félicitations!

Great single on Ghost Box...
Love that super heavyweight vinyl and, of course, Julian House's design work.
Will you be collaborating further with the label?

Yes tell us what made you shout at the radio!
I am not Radio 4 but would gladly collaborate with you to make a doc about the Western influence in East Asian 50s and 60s music for Resonance FM.
I found the programme interesting but was a bit miffed at why Yao Lee's Rose Rose I Love You was not actually played. I have a Reggae version of Kung Fu Fighting that I am rather fond of.

Mei Yau do expand on your reply please...

I think it's probably a common happening all over the world - we lose these wonderful buildings built from the 50s through to the 80s because they're just not old enough to be considered "heritage" yet.

I'll be doing my best to get it on 7", I recently got a few albums of vinyl and it reminded me of how much warmer it all sounds. I'm low on funds at the moment so I'm hoping they don't all sell out before I can get my own copy! Thanks for the tip on Rough Trade, I'll give them a go.

There had been rumours that the school buildings would be demolished but I assume that only the 1960s and 70s bits are being torn down. Still, the interiors will all be erased no matter how the developers treat the facades.

I hope you enjoy the Study Series - are you getting it on 7"? Our releases are available at places besides iTunes; for example, you can buy on Amazon, eMusic, Boomkat, Bleep, Play and probably a few other online retailers too. I think that Rough Trade will have copies of both the Willow Pattern Songs EP CD and the Study Series 7".

That's a beautiful old building, I hope they retain some of that "mish-mash" of styles internally. I like the stair cases.

As an aside, I'm looking forward to getting my copy of the Study Series. Any chance you might sell your other albums outside of the iTunes shop?
